Where do you live?
What do you do for a living?
What brings you here?
Personal interests and hobbies
Your environment (the airport, restaurant, hotel, park, beach, etc.)
The weather (但值得注意的是,已经有不少老外提出:中国学生滥用天气作为交谈必聊工具,会引起人们的反感,感觉是为了练习口语而说,而不是真正地对身边的人和事感兴趣)
marital status 2) age 3) income 4) religion 5) politics
May / could I borrow your newspaper / magazine / the salt and pepper?
Could you tell me if this is where the plane leaves for Melbourne?
Would you happen to know the nearest post office / a good restaurant / a nice hotel?
4) I was wondering of you’re from around here. This is my first visit to Manhattan.
5) Sorry to bother you, but is this seat taken / is anyone sitting here?
6) Would you mind telling me where you got that book?
7) Could I trouble you for change? I don’t seem to have any quarters.
8) You wouldn’t happen to know if there’s a Cafe / a bank / a grocery store near here?
Excuse me, do you have the time?
This is a great hotel, isn’t it?
I can’t believe how busy the airport is today.
Nice day, isn’t it / eh?
So, what brings you here?
Do you come here often?
Are you from here?
Nationality: I am Chinese / Korean / German / Mexcian.
Residence: I’m from Beijing / Seoul /Hamburg / Guadalajara.
Job: I’m an engineer / a teacher / a student / a system analyst. I am in advertising / in electronics / in insurance. I am self-employed / retired. I am with McGraw-Hill / AT&T / Siemens.
Hobbies and interests: I’m interested in sports / fashion / travelling / art. I’m into aerobics / gourmet cooking / pottery.
That must be very exiting /challenging / interesting! (formal)
That sounds very interesting, indeed!
Now, isn’t that interesting!
You don’t say / mean it!

You’re kidding!
How interesting!
Is that so!
Really!
Wow!
Uh-huh! (informal)
区分“How are you?”与 “How do you do?”: 前者是一个问题,需要获得一个回答。 或者 “How are you?”。
How did you meet your husband or wife?
A: How did you meet your girl friend?
B: Actually she was my classmate from school days, and at first I didn’t even like her.
May I introduce myself? My name’s Simmy.
Let me introduce myself. I’m Yolanda Song.
By the way, I am Ice Li.
Is this your first time to Shanghai?
Have you been to Beijing before?
Are you new to IETG (a company name)?
Are you familiar with this area?
How long have you been here?
Are you here on business / a holiday?
Did you come here to work / study / travel around?
Do you plan to stay here long?
Which school / university are you studying at?
How long are you staying / visiting?
Have you seen much of the city / country?
So how do you like it so far?
How was your flight / trip / first lecture?
The weather’s been nice / great / very cold, isn’t it?
Are you used to / have you got used to the food yet?
Where are you from?
Where do you call home?
What part of China do you live in?
Are you traveling alone or with family / friends?
Do you like music / theatre / sports / skiing / swimming?
What do you do for a living?
What kind of business are you in?
A: Have you been here long? B: No, I’ve just arrived. And you?
A: Have you been to the gallery? B: No, not yet. Have you?
A: Are you staying very long? B: No, only a few days. How long are you here for?
A:Where are you from? B: From Beijing. And where do you call home?
A: Are you here on business? B: Yes, I am. What / how about you?
A: How long are you staying here? B: Two weeks. Are you here very long?
A: What do you do for a living? B: I’m an architect. And where do you work?
It’s been great / a pleasure /meeting / seeing / talking to you. —— My pleasure, too. / The pleasure is all mine.
Nice to have met you. —— Likewise. / Me, too, very much so.
I really enjoy our conversation / talking to you. —— I do, too. / Same here.
We’ll have to stay in touch. —— That’s a deal. Give me a call /a ring / a buzz.
We should get together again / sometime / soon. —— For sure.
Look me up next time you’re in town. —— I will do that.
Don’t forget to give me a call / send me an e-mail. —— You bet!
Drop in sometime. —— Sure thing. / I will sure try.
Have a nice day / a pleasant evening / a safe trip / an enjoyable flight back. —— You have a nice day, too. / Wish you all the same.
Enjoy your flight / stay / tour. —— Thanks! Will see you later.
Good luck to you. —— Same to you.
All the best. ——Likewise.
Take care. —— You, too.
Take it easy. —— Yes, I will, and all the very best to you, too.
